I couldn't resist, even though the thought of it makes me cringe. Hope you enjoy and please, no flames... I don't think I could handle it... :) One last addition, I want you to know that I don't see Dana Scully acting the way she does in this tale, it just turned out this way... :) (Isn't that strange, the writer doesn't even like her own tale... :) Disclaimers: Dana Scully, Fox Mulder, Walter Skinner and CancerMan are all characters which were created by Chris Carter (the god of television), Ten Thirteen Productions and Fox Broadcasting Company. Thanks for the use... :) No serious infringements intended. chall@barint.on.ca Mixed Match by Charleyne Hall ------ She stepped toward the office, looking awkwardly at Mulder, who was a few paces before her. Mulder twisted the knob to the door of the Assistant Director's office, after giving a sharp knock and waiting long enough to hear the man behind the door growl at them to come in. Scully unconsciously straightened her skirt as she followed her partner into the room. "Ah, Agents Mulder and Scully, please have a seat." the balding man, behind the desk said. He held a tight lipped smile on his face, almost a smug look. Scully seated herself next to her partner and fidgeted nervously. "Sir, I can explain--" Mulder began. "Are you sure about that, Agent Mulder?" Skinner interrupted. His smile faded and he looked between the two agents. Scully couldn't hold his gaze, for she knew that they were getting into trouble again, but that she wouldn't get the brunt of the storm. "At least let me explain..." Mulder said, but an icy glare from their boss made him look uneasily away and his voice trailed off. "Agent Mulder, I have had it up to here," he said, pointing to his forehead, "with your rediculous spendings on your field investigations." he picked up a folder and flipped through it. "Twice, I repeat, TWICE, you needed to have your cell phone replaced and that was on ONE trip. You totaled ANOTHER bureau vehicle, you required excessive medical attention for ridiculous reasons and that's not even including what you billed for your food!" he growled and roughly shoved the folder in front of Mulder. "Sir--" Scully began, but Skinner looked at her and set his jaw. "And you, Agent Scully, should watch your expenses too! You of all people should be the one to keep both yourself and your partner on track." he snarled. He glanced at the two agents. Mulder sat very still, his jaw working in anger, not saying a word. Scully herself kept looking back and forth between Skinner and Mulder. She felt terrible that Mulder was getting into trouble for such a stupid reason, but she supposed it was part of Skinner's job. "Will that be all, Sir?" Mulder asked, staring at his boss. "Yes, Agent Mulder you are dismissed. Agent Scully I'd like you to stay behind. There's a few other things I'd like to take up with you." he said, and stood up. He walked casually over to the door, just as Mulder stood. Skinner gently opened the door and allowed Mulder to escape with at least some of his dignity intact. When Mulder was gone, Skinner closed the door and walked over to Scully, standing right behind her chair. "You shouldn't be so harsh on him, you know." she said flatly. Skinner began to rub her shoulders and he sighed. "I know. I can't help it though. Sometimes I wonder what you two are really up to out there." he said, teasingly. Scully shrugged her shoulders, indicating that he should stop. She felt a little out of sorts today. "What's the matter, hon? Are you that upset about it?" he asked, feeling the tension in the room. "Walter, I just don't like the fact that he gets into all this trouble--over the stupidest of all things--and yet I know you'd never be upset at me for the same reasons. He's my partner, but he's also one of my best friends." she said, but she didn't expect him to understand. Skinner squatted beside her chair and she looked down at him. His hand reached up and touched her cheek. "Dana, you're so sweet. I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't be so harsh, and I don't intend to. He used to get into much more trouble than that. Yet, now that we're together, I can't stop that because he--and selected others-- might get a little suspicious. I've already explained that to you." he said, a hand lovingly caressing her auburn hair. "I know, I know. I just can't help it. I mean, I can't stand seeing him get into trouble, but I don't want to lose you either. They would fire both of us if they ever found out about..." she began but her voice cracked. "I don't want to think about it." she said and stood up. He watched as she paced around the room. He couldn't figure out when and where they had clicked, but something about their personalities just seemed to fit together. She was hard working and trust worthy, while he too, was much the same. He smiled. She definately was beautiful. The dark skirt and blazer, with pumps and a grey blouse beneath accented her fiary hair. Those azure eyes were to die for. He couldn't help but feel his heart lighten whenever she entered the room. Yet today, there was a differant aura about her. It was as if she was more upset about his screaming at Mulder than she had been in the past. He sighed and stood up. She stood with her back to him, the tension in her muscles was evident. "Dana, I'm sorry. I won't be so harsh next time. I promise. In fact, if you like I'll even apologize to him." he said, touching her shoulder again. "Okay, alright." she said and turned to him. She looked into his eyes and smiled that charming smile that she reserved usually just for him. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close to him, feeling the warmth of her body. He kissed the top of her head and smiled into her hair. Finally she looked up at him, and he saw an oportunity to engulf her in a passionate kiss. She responded with a lively energy, but it didn't last too long. Both pulled away and smiled at each other. "Well, guess I better get back to work." she sighed. He pulled her loosely into a hug again, then released her. "Dana, I'm glad we're together. I can't imagine living without you." he said, as she stepped to the door. She smiled at him again, then opened the door. "So am I. Neither could I." she said and disappeared, closing the door behind her. ----- Dana walked away from the office feeling a little better than she had the last month. To her surprise, Mulder was standing around the corner waiting for her to appear. She felt a pang of guilt rise in her soul. She still hadn't told him that she was seeing Skinner. Mulder simply would not understand. He held an angry gaze as she stopped before him. "I can't believe he just ragged me out." he said, then he noticed that she seemed a little upset. "What's the matter, Scully?" he asked. "Mulder, there's a few things we've got to discuss." she said and she pulled him by the hand to the elevator which would take them to the basement offices. She had finally decided to tell Mulder and let him deal with it any way he could, even if it meant that he would sulk for the next week. He listened carefully and nodded a few times. By the time she was done relating the events which led up to her and Skinner becomming a couple, Mulder was in a state of shock. He sat staring at her blankly. Scully flashed a nervous smile at him and waited to find out what he'd say. ----- End Mixed Match 1/1 __________________________________________________________________________ XAngst Anonymous Member T h e Smart Young X-Phile #276 - - Lone Gunwoman #41 \ / Melissketeer X Skinner Chick Extreme Possibilities Member / \ EMXC Mysterious & Suspicious Founder - - X-Files Fan Fic Lover F i l e s Co-Founder Anti-Spellin' Brigade (tm) _________________________________________________________________________
